about
Ten years ago, on February 1st, 2013…
I moved to Chicago by train from Virginia. I had 2 guitars and 4 suitcases with me, and I was open to whatever happened along the way. I wrote a song on the train called “People Pumping Pedals” that shaped the way I’d write songs thereafter. I found a home in the Ravenswood neighborhood and branched out from there to build beautiful relationships through music and theatre, with CAUDog Records releasing my first full length album “People Pumping Pedals” in 2014, forming my band LIZ AND THE LOVELIES, teaching at the OLD TOWN SCHOOL OF FOLK MUSIC, finding my theatre homes in FIREBRAND THEATRE, AMERICAN BLUES THEATRE, and CHICAGO CHILDREN’S THEATRE. Collaborating and composing with CABINET OF CURIOSITY.
The song “People Pumping Pedals” never left my sets, and it took on a new shape, extending and accumulating more wisdom as time went on. Today, February 1, 2023, I am releasing a very raw acoustic version of “People Pumping Pedals (A Decade Down the Line)” produced by Nilko Andreas in Azlo Production Studios to commemorate my decade in Chicago as a musician, actor, and teaching artist, and to mark this beautiful time that I will take with me wherever the tracks lead.
I’m very proud that the song is pared with an animation created by my very talented cousin, Ann Summers.
lyrics
PEOPLE PUMPING PEDALS
I'm running out of time
All estranged frozen in their place
Disappearing by the tracks inside my mind
Why were you so kind
I never saw a stranger in your face
But braced for colder weather down the line
You're a boy behind an old man's eyes
Full of stories: the things that never die
I wanna drink you with wine by fireside
But with people pumping pedals
Who knows where I'll see you on the ride
Through the mountainside
Swollen backs laid all the tracks
Not knowing what was on the other side
So the cities swelled with people pumping pedals
Throwing glowing wishes in the wishing well
Well
I'm a woman with endless sense of pride
Full of stories: the things that never die
I'll keep moving and never go inside
With people pumping pedals
Maybe someday you'll be right there
Ooo
I'm a woman who is running out of time
For telling her stories: the things that never die
I'll stop
I'll stop
I'll stop moving
And I will go inside
With people pumping pedals
Maybe someday you'll be right there
By my side
